El mercado vacacional británico continúa creciendo, aunque se aprecia un cambio de tendencia hacia viajes de menor duración. El auge del viaje corto tiene como resultado la demanda de nuevos productos y destinos, abriéndose el mercado a segmentos como el del Turismo Rural.

Así se aprecia si se analizan los índices de ocupación del Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE) atendiendo exclusivamente a alojamientos turísticos extrahoteleros (parcela en la que se integran los alojamientos rurales). De acuerdo con estos, en 2012 se alojaron 2.104.667 viajeros procedentes de Reino Unido, con un total de 16.598.890 pernoctaciones.

Esta tendencia se ha mantenido a lo largo del primer mes de 2013, ya que, según la serie mensual del INE, Reino Unido se ha mantenido como principal mercado emisor durante enero de este año, con 98.743 viajeros y 943.471 pernoctaciones, englobando el 30% del total de turistas internacionales.
